During the Yongjia period of the Western Jin Dynasty, northern ethnic minorities invaded the Central Plains, and a large number of refugees from the Central Plains crossed the Huai River and headed south. In order to appease the immigrants from Xuzhou who moved south, the Eastern Jin Dynasty established “Xuzhou” in Jingkou (now Zhenjiang) to alleviate the immigrants’ homesickness and enhance their sense of belonging. In the second year of Yongchu of the Southern Dynasty, in order to distinguish it from Xuzhou (Northern Xuzhou) in Huaibei, the imperial court placed overseas Chinese in Jingkou as “Nanxu”.
After that, the name of Nan Xuzhou went through the Song, Qi, Liang and Chen dynasties in the Southern Dynasty, and lasted until the abolition of the ninth year of Kaihuang in the Sui Dynasty. Jingkou was later renamed Runzhou, Zhenjiang, etc. The poems such as Wang Changling, a poet of the Tang Dynasty, “September is in Nanxu” and other evidence the long-term impact of “Nanxu” as a historical symbol in Zhenjiang. At present, there is a main road called Nanxu Avenue in the main urban area of ββZhenjiang.
